The Herd

As part of Polyester's cover of The Peats Ridge Festival we recently caught up with the fantastic Shannon Kennedy aka Ozi Batla from The Herd.

We spoke all things festivals.
Be sure to check out Shannon's essential items for festivals including, "all the pieces for your tent!" We've all been there!

What importance does Peats Ridge Festival being a sustainable festival play to The Herd being on the line-up?
Peats Ridge is a really well run festival. They do a lot to minimise the impact of having thousands of punters on site, which is great. Obviously it's at a little extra expense for them, which is commendable.
The Herd is known for having a strong political viewpoint onstage. Do you discuss prior what message you want to project at particular shows, or is it something that naturally comes out on stage?
We've been playing together for a long time so we don't really need to concoct banter before a show. We might discuss a new track or a change we've recently made but usually we're just getting amped and writing a last minute set list!
Obviously you are a large group to be onstage. How do you guys like to utilise the space available? How do you ensure that each of you get your own input?
We've played on massive stages and we've played on stages where we were in each other's laps. I guess we just approach it like water: cover all the available space - including the speakers, the pit and the crowd sometimes.
What are your 5 essential items for music festivals?
Spare battery/solar charger for ya phone.
A pair of shoes you don't mind killing. Stubby cooler. All the pieces for your tent!
An open mind.
Have you been to any music festivals outside Australia? If yes what was your experience at them?
Yeah I've been to some festivals in Europe, South America and South East Asia. They were all great in their own way. Maybe not as loose as Aussie festivals!
What three acts would play at your dream festival (alive or dead)?
Fela Kuti, the complete Wu Tang Clan (with ODB) and Jimi Hendrix.

What are the plans for The Herd in 2013?
We've got some great festival slots coming up and we're all working on music so it should be another productive year for the collective.
Who are you looking forward to seeing at Peats Ridge?
The Herd are playing Peats Ridge Festival. You can buy tickets here.
